How to Use a French Butter Bell

A French butter bell—also called a butter crock or butter keeper—keeps your butter fresh and perfectly spreadable at room temperature. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Soften a stick of butter.
  2. Press the butter firmly into the lid of the butter bell.
  3. Pour about 1/3 cup of water into the base.
  4. (Optional) Add a pinch of salt to help prevent mold.
  5. Place the lid back into the base—the water creates an airtight seal that keeps oxygen out.

With this simple method, your butter stays fresh and creamy for up to a month. The butter bell design originated in Vallauris, France, and remains a timeless kitchen favorite.
