Collection: Butter Bell

To use a French butter bell, also known as a butter crock or butter keeper, you can follow these steps:

    1. Soften a stick of butter
    2. Press the butter into the lid of the butter bell
    3. Add water (about 1/3 cup) to the base
      1. Change water every 2-3 days. You may add a pinch of salt to help prevent mold
    4. Turn the lid with butter back into the base
  1. The water and lid create an airtight seal that keeps oxygen out and helps keep the butter fresh and spreadable at room temperature for about a month. The butter bell is thought to have originated in Vallauris, France.
