How to Use a French Butter Bell
A French butter bell—also called a butter crock or butter keeper—keeps your butter fresh and perfectly spreadable at room temperature. Here’s how to use it:
- Soften a stick of butter.
- Press the butter firmly into the lid of the butter bell.
- Pour about 1/3 cup of water into the base.
- (Optional) Add a pinch of salt to help prevent mold.
- Place the lid back into the base—the water creates an airtight seal that keeps oxygen out.
With this simple method, your butter stays fresh and creamy for up to a month. The butter bell design originated in Vallauris, France, and remains a timeless kitchen favorite.
